Curt Schilling was in his senior year of high school when Ubaldo Jimenez was born. Tonight they meet, the opposing pitchers in Game 2 of the World Series. The issues are obvious: can a 23 year old kid from the Dominican Republic keep his stomach, head and heart under control and, can an almost 41 year old fading master muster up one more big game performance? It is just the kind of wonderful juxtaposition that baseball shares so often. Schill is pitching for a plaque in the Hall of Fame; Jimenez hasn't yet had a full season under his belt. I'm glad to have the old guy. Line of the day: will he be the Schilling of old, or just old Schilling? About 16 people used that line on Charlie Steiner's Baseball Beat today on XM Radio. You really should subscribe. Charlie's show is worth the $13 all by itself.
The Rockies' lineup should have their timing down a little better tonight after the 8 day layoff. The Red Sox are being the Red Sox. They looked at 197 pitches last night. They are patient because they know they are good. They are not in a hurry. They are comfortable with 2 strikes in the at bat, and 2 outs in the inning. There is not one batter in the Sox lineup who will panic for any reason.
This is why baseball is great, and, on days like this, I really do live for this!
First pitch in about 20 minutes!
